A young man who had applied for
a post of journalist came for an interview and when he saw the editor in the
latter's ’sanctum sanctorum', he was feeling nervous thinking that he would be
asked difficult and embarrassing questions..He was, however, relieved when the
editor merely gave him a half-sheet of paper and asked him to write an essay.
"On what subject?"
asked the candidate.
”Where do you come from? "
the editor wanted to know.
"From Mutwal, 'replied the
candidate '
'Then write an essay on
Mutwal.”
After some time the editor got
back the paper and could not help laughing when he saw the first paragraph as
follows:
”I hail from Mutwal, which is
not far from Fort, which is in the heart of the metropolis Colombo. The
majority of the people in Mutwal are very poor. Their occupation is fishing,
though some breed pigs as a hobby and those pigs serve as scavengers in the
'pig system latrines. My townsmen cannot afford to engage themselves in recognised
social activities. Their only recreation is procreation and as a result they
raise big families!"
